Entry 53
So after that scuffle with the bandits, we searched through
the stuff and divvied up the ammo, weapons, and armor. Sunshine got a new
hunting rifle and Babs took one of the shotgun and clothes that fit him. We
split up the fusion cells and I gave some of my portion to Lab Coat, because I
feel like Big Mouth and me work well together, so I’d rather use that than Mel
or Joy if I’m able to. Lab Coat took the Tesla Rifle (he’ll need to come up
with a name for it now!)
Murph thought we should keep watch, in case more mirelurks
show up. I stayed up for the first watch with him before turnin’ in. I was
gonna play cards, but Murph thought it wiser to patrol the farm, so he could
use his sonar senses. You know that Murph, he’s a smart guy!
When I headed to Sunshine’s to sleep, I heard cryin’ coming
from Lab Coat’s room... so I stopped by to make sure he was alright. It seemed
like he was kinda upset about killing those bandits. At first, I was a little
confused, I thought he killed stuff before... he said yeah he’s killed lots of
people before, before having all the orgies. Ah... right. I’ve seen this
before, with young initiates. Some of ‘em ain’t cut out for the harder parts of
the job, you know? I tried explaining to Lab Coat, where I’m from some people
are better at the book stuff or fixin’ stuff, not everyone has ta be a stone-cold
killer, you know? Lab Coat said he’s good at killin’ and that Joy is misnamed,
he doesn’t have no joy when he uses her. He’s right, some people are good at
killin’ but it’s not in them to do it, you know? I guess this musta got through
to him cuz he hugged me, getting his snot all over me... I patted his back...
and then he just sorta fell asleep in my arms... I kinda exchanged a look with
Karl and then laid the poor guy onta his bed and tucked him in. I quietly crept
inta Sunshine’s room and laid on the hardwood floor next to her bed.
When I woke up, my clothes felt too tight. Sunshine said
it’s because alla that dried snot on me and told me to wash up. I striped off
my fatigues and carried them through the farmhouse – some of the others had
started to gather for breakfast, but looked like Lab Coat was still sleeping. I
headed to the trough outside where I washed them as best I could.
After a few minutes I heard Sunshine call for me, so I laid
my clothes out to dry and hurried in the house. Ellie Mae and Jethro was
talking about something called Walla Walla and gave Sunshine a little packet of
seeds, by the look on her face you’d think they gave her gold bars or
somethin’, Lab Coat also seemed excited by the packet.
Speaking of Lab Coat, he looked kinda different at
breakfast, couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Seemed more confident somehow.
His hair looked really good too... and he was a little easier to understand
too, like he was speaking more clear, you know?
Ellie Mae and Jethro told us about an island west of Tacoma
that’s rumored to have some kinda berry. Sunshine immediately perked up. I
guess that’s something we should look into once we settle this pizzah! quest. (I
was thinking – we’re making friends with all these farmers, maybe we could find
a tract of land somewhere near all these new friends of ours, start Sunshine’s
Settlement somewhere between here and Kirkland’s maybe?)
Closer to the end of breakfast, Jed and Daisy Mae came in
the house. Daisy Mae said she’d be happy to show us how to make cheese from the
brahmin milk. Sunshine, Babs, and Lab Coat were super excited to hear that!
Then Jed pulled out a wooden box, said he belonged to his
father. He wanted to give it to us as a thank you for saving them. He pulled
out a decorative belt and holster with dancing brahmin and a 10mm pistol. I
think all of us knew this would look perfect on Babs, who gladly accepted it.
Then Jed pulled out a weird Kaiju mask... Lab Coat asked if I wanted it, but, I
mean, it clearly is perfect for him, so I insisted he take it.
Since Jed was giving us stuff, Lab Coat wanted to give them
something back... so he called for Karl and pulled out something he called
“Argon’s Bread.” It smelled awful... and Jed reluctantly accepted it. Not quite
sure exactly what that was about, but you know those scientist types, always up
to something, I guess.
We asked if there was anything we could help them with –
with Sunshine’s injury, we thought it best if we stuck around the farm for the
day (or year if it was up to Lab Coat.) They said they could use help burying
the bodies. Murph and I said that’d be no problem. I asked if they wanted any
sorta “warning” for the other bandits, but Jed didn’t like the idea of dead
bodies being hung around the farm.
Then Jed said if there are any repairs we’d like to make, he
has a workbench we’re welcome to use. Lab Coat was very excited by this and
asked if any of us wanted to upgrade any of our weapons. All of us had some
things we’d like to improve, so we helped Lab Coat crush down our junk to make
the parts needed. ... I was a little too enthusiastic about crushing the
materials and pulverized most of the junk I had... but luckily we still had
plenty to work from and Lab Coat had enough common materials for future
improvements. The upgrade I wanted for my Big Mouth was simple enough, so Lab
Coat said he could work on those and the upgrades to Babs’ pipe gun today. When
Lab Coat finished my Big Mouth’s upgrade, it looked like it was smiling (or
frowning) depending on which way it was held. Lab Coat even painted “my Big
Mouth” on the weapon, or at least, that’s what he told me it said. I’ll take
his word for it.
When he handed me my improved weapon, I reached out for a
handshake like they did in that movie Predator... but Lab Coat seemed to
misinterpret the gesture and placed his head into my hand instead. Ah... haha. We’ll
work on that.
While we was busy breaking down junk and Lab Coat was
upgrading our stuff, Karl was busy burying bodies (Murph and I would
occasionally help, though a good chunk of our day was breaking down the junk.)
While we was doing that, Sunshine was resting her leg.
Toward bedtime, I asked if it’d be alright if I slept on the floor again, but
then Sunshine said something about Lab Coat being in the room with her. Oh! I
didn’t realize there was somethin’ between the two of them... but they said it
was to “check in on” her injuries... but I wasn’t sure if it was like how
Sunshine was taking care of my injuries or something more “romantic” you know?
They said it wasn’t like it, but I don’t know, I think Lab Coat acts a little
different around Sunshine maybe?
Before we turned in for bed, I asked Lab Coat if he wanted
to take first watch with me. I wanted to show him some tips. He did a pretty
good job. During our watch, we saw Babs in the Brahmin pen... striped down to
his underroes (though still wearin’ the dancing brahmin belt.) Seemed like he
was showing a lot of affection toward both his brahmin – even the one he always
yells at. That guy... that guy is somethin’ else, you know? Heh...
At the end of our watch, I said that Lab Coat did a real
good job fixing our weapons – I was super excited about the improvements he did
to my Big Mouth. I said that when you’re in a squad, everyone brings something
different to the group and he’s really good at fixin’ stuff. I tried the
handshake again and this time Lab Coat got it. Then he, uh, got kinda misty and
ran off.

The next mornin, we woke up to some corn walla chowder and
it had some cheese sprinkled on it. I don’t know why but everytime I had a
little bit of cheese, my rear end got a little noisy.
When Lab Coat got up, he was dressed a little different. He
had his shirt rolled up, so his “abs” were showing. I thought his new look
looked pretty good. I asked Jed if he had any leftover paint, so I painted a
six-pack on Lab Coat’s abdomen area. Babs said something about he wasn’t sure
if I counted right or whatevah, but it looked pretty good to me.
That day, Daisy Mae and Ellie Mae showed most of the group
how to make cheese... but I figured it was probably our last day on the farm,
so I wanted to spend more time with Jethro, you know? I helped Jethro and Jed
out around the farm, getting ready for the upcoming farmer’s market. Jethro was
cracking jokes all day. I didn’t say much of anything, just kinda... grateful
to spend time with him. Not that it’s the same or anything, but just kinda miss
it, you know?
At the end of the day, Lab Coat said something about wanting
to help Murph and they went off, though it didn’t know much of how that went.
Murph seemed to be in a good mood after, so musta went well I guess. Then Lab
Coat and Jethro went out for a walk.... I thought bettah about following after,
I don’t know, I didn’t want to get all nosy.
That evening we took watch again, I let Lab Coat take the
lead, but it didn’t go so well... he seemed very unfocused.
I again laid down on the floor next to Sunshine and went to
sleep.
Entry 55
The next morning, we got ready to head out. Daisy Mae handed
us 3 lbs of cheese! And then Babs did a really interesting performance for 20
minutes. He was rolling all over the floor. As first I thought he was having a
seizure or somethin’ but... it seemed kinda purposeful, you know? It was
strange... but also inspiring? That Babs, he’s something, heh heh.
After the others started to head out, I hung back, told the
farmers to take care and then I turned to Ellie Mae and said, you look after
Jethro, he’s a real special guy. I could hear my voice breaking a little, but
tried to keep my cool. As I turned to leave, Jed said we could have the cart to
take, if we wanted. So, I grabbed it and jogged up to the others. Sunshine was
excited about the cart and attached it to Rosemary and Thyme. I put Chompers in
the cart, was a little easier that way.
Oh! Chompers. Forgot – the last couple days I had been
tryin’ to teach him different commands... gave him some of those fuckers to
chew on (before we buried ‘em) and exercised him a bit. The others were like,
Chomper’s is just a puppy and he’s real big, and were strongly hinting that we
should probably leave him with Kirkland, but I don’t know... he’s such a cute
little guy, you know? It’s nice having a dog around again. I don’t know, maybe
I’m not the best and handling animals though... I mean, I did a pretty good
job... but, it wasn’t ever my job in our unit to handle Rex, you know? That was
Tommy’s thing.
As we was walking, group was talking about abs... Babs’ abs
and Labs’ abs... I guess mine would just be abs’ abs? I was sayin’ we could be
Abs n Brahmin instead of Brains n Brahmin, you know? But... Brains n Brahmin is
probably bettah.
I was tryin to talk to Sunshine to see what was going on
with her and Lab Coat but she insisted there weren’t nuthin going on. I said
like how she was taking care for me after I was hurt? Wasn’t like “playing
doctor?” I musta said something funny cuz she asked me something... and I just kinda
blacked out... and ran off, sayin’ I was going after chompers.
As we was making our way back to Kirkland, we figured we
wouldn’t get there til after dark, so the group thought best that we find a
place to make camp. Sunshine found a hidden spot behind a hill, near the hwy. I
asked Sunshine if she wanted to take watch... but then Lab Coat came running
up, all excited to do watch with me... shit. So I said maybe Sunshine and I
could do watch another night together. Sunshine said that’s alright, she’d do
watch with Murph instead.
During our watch, I was tryin to show Lab Coat some better techniques...
like actually paying attention to what he was lookin’ at you know? I thought he
was starting to get it... but when I noticed a couple eyes in the distance, for
some reason he saw something way worse and he wanted to hurry over to it! So...
I grabbed him and he hit the ground hard. I told him I didn’t want him to get
himself killed. He said it was like when I went off and spotted the bandits and
then I said the assholest thing evah and said, “And you think you’re the most
capable of the bunch to be the one sneaking off?”And then he got real upset and
ran off, pulling his head band off and running to Karl, I guess... I fucked
that up real bad.
Sunshine and Murph took the next watch, they made a good
team, that’s for sure.
The next morning we started heading out again... I pulled Lab
Coat aside – he was looking like his old self again, his shirt was rolled down
and his hair looked like his normal doctor style... still not quite sure what’s
going on, though I kinda like the new look, you know? Not quite sure why
though. Anyway... time to get real, you know? I told Lab Coat—Argon, that... I
was real sorry about what I said last night. I didn’t mean it like I said it. I
said that... we’re a squad right, a unit? And... my last unit... our medic got
killed first, we got jumped and when she died... there wasn’t anyone to patch
up the others. I got lucky, I survived... but I don’t want that to happen
again, you know? Someone like Argon, he’s real special. He’s got skills to keep
the rest of us alive. I could try to do that, but it’d take a lot of luck. When
you’re in a unit, you all have to work together – you all have different
skills. He said it likes that in the vault, everyone has different skills, but
you have to stay in your role... you can’t branch out. I said, well if we
wanted to learn from each other, that’s great. That only makes us all better...
but sometimes you also gotta lean on what you’re good at. I’m real strong, and
Sunshine is good at blasting enemies from far away. And Murph, well Murph is
killer with his claws, you know? And then Babs makes us all feel good, really
inspires us with his speeches. And Argon, well, he’s good at fixing us when
we’re broken (like how he helped Sunshine’s leg and fixed Murph and Karl when
they was broken...) In a unit, we depend on each other to keep each other
alive... and Argon is very special and if something happens to him, the rest of
us would be in big trouble. Didn’t mean to share so much about my past... don’t
like talkin’ about all that, but I was just tryin to get through to him, you
know? We hugged it out... think we both got a little misty...
When we was done talking, Murph and Sunhine said there was
folks on the bridge. As we approached we saw they was FOC. Those FOCers again. Instinctually,
I put my baseball cap on Millie’s head and told her to stay more hidden. I
reminded the group, the FOC... they won’t do nuthin’ to hurt someone like
Millie, but they also won’t do nuthin’ to help them either... so better to not to
draw attention to folks like Millie, you know?
As we approached, the leader of them, Corporeal Graves said
they heard rumors about a super mutant in these parts. Shit, they probably mean
Kirkland. Said there’s a bounty for any information (or an even bigger bounty
if we trapped him ourselves.) I didn’t want to do the talkin’ I’m not good at
that, you know... Argon said we didn’t know anything about Super Mutants, but
there was a cabin with lots of blood and if there was a Super Mutant, that’s
probably the best likely place it’d be. (Good thinking, doc.) The other chimed
in to support what Argon was sayin.’ Babs went on a tangent about kaiju and
said he didn’t even think super mutatns were real... they’s like movies or
something. Graves got real suspicious and asked how he knew about “movies.” I
stepped up and said, “I told them about movies.” When he asked me how I knew about
them, I said “I’m Brotherhood.” He seemed to accept this answer. I said most
people only ever see a super mutant once, you know, because then they’re dead.
Graves then noticed Murph... and started looking him over and I said Murph’s Brotherhood,
he’s Brotherhood, he’s with me. Graves didn’t see no Brotherhood insignias on
Murph and we said that’s because Murph got injured and we replaced those
parts... things was getting real tense and then alla sudden Babs’ brahmin just
started running! So, Babs’ started running after them and we after him... boy that
was lucky!
As the FOC turned to cross the bridge, Argon noticed
something fall from their pack... so I picked it up... when we got further
away, I opened it. The others asked what it said... It had a picture of an
angry lady... and a lot of bigger words I couldn’t quite make out... so I
handed it to Babs... who started reading it, but what he was sayin’ didn’t
quite make sense, so Argon took it and read it and said that lady who gave us
the pizzah! quest is wanted by the FOC for sedition or something.
The others weren’t sure if that meant she was bad or not...
I said the FOC – they’re like the Brotherhood, they are kinda black and white
on things. I said, they might not have noticed, but I... I don’t like Super
Mutants much. Someone like Kirkland, he’s different, you know? But those
FOC’ers won’t see that... so just like him, they could be looking at the lady
in white very similar, you know? Seeing her as bad, but maybe she aint bad,
just misunderstood. I said we can try to find out more and if she’s evil, we
can handle her... but if she’s not, maybe we can help her.
Shit. Things just got a lot more complicated you know?
